The first ever Bulgarian splitboard demo weekend took place during the 24th & 25th January in Rila Moutains. We chose the destination around the Seven Rila Lakes since it provides easy access to various terrain that’s suitable to both intermediate and more experienced riders.
This event was something we’ve been planning for a long time – we wanted to show the advantages of splitboarding to a wider audience, so we decided to provide a number of equipped boards for people to try out, free of charge. The interest went beyond our expectations – more than 25 people wrote us to sign up and book a spot for the event.
We headed for the mountains with expectations for bad weather with low visibility, only to find out that the sun had different plans for us – we had 40 cm of fresh snow and a bluebird day on Saturday, with no people in the mountain besides us – the perfect conditions we needed to take our guests on their first ever splitboard tour.
Each day we did a couple of short hikes, led by the Splitshop and Split The Mountain crew, that provided tips about how the boards should be used in the most efficient way when in touring mode. One of our most important goals was to show snowboarders how efficient is touring on a splitboard compared to snowshoeing or other methods that involve carrying a board on your back.
During the second part of the test – the descent – the riders had the chance to experience the performance of the high-end freeride boards by Venture Snowboards, Voile and Burton Snowboards that we had provided. It’s always fun to ride such boards in fresh powder snow, so in the end of the day we saw lots of smiling faces and we got nothing but positive feedback! This was definitely the first out of many such gatherings!
