Silverton Splitfest 2013 Summary

John and Jason
Silverton Splitfest 2013

This year, we had 52 participates and 11 sponsors in attendance. We had people drive and fly in from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Washington, California, British Columbia and Massachusetts. Skill level ranged from professional guides to newbies. Demos were provided by Spark R&D, Venture, Jones, Karakarom, Voile, OZ Snowboards and Phantom. Lots of thanks to those that provided demos as people were really stoked to try out the latest gear and helped to draw people to the event. We had good stability and some fresh snow came in just a few days before the event started. We lucked out and the timing was perfect. We had several people who were there last year along with lots of new faces.

We started off the event on Thursday evening with a shop tour at the Venture Snowboard shop located there in Silverton. This was a great time of hanging out with the Venture crew, drinking beer and eating some tasty appetizers. Thank you Klem and Lisa! Later that night, Andrew Klotz who is a local guide and author of the local backcountry guide book, gave a brief terrain orientation slideshow.

On Friday night, we made a last minute change of venue due to an unexpected burst of people attending and much more demos on hand then planned. This lead us to rented out the bar and seating area at the Grand Imperial Hotel. This provided more room for sponsors to set up tables to display new gear and pass out demos. It also was a great central place for people to hang out after a day of touring and made it easy on Melissa of Elevated Fine Foods to prepare and serve the amazing food she made each night.

Saturday night was the big raffle. This year we wanted to use the raffle to raise some money for the local avalanche school and the state avalanche forecasting service. From the raffle and the tip jar next to the kegs supplied by Ska Brewery, $1,565 was raised! We gave $200 to Silverton Avalanche School and $1365 to Colorado Avalanche Information Center. To those who donated gear for the raffle, we can’t say thanks enough. People were really stoked and it was fun to see gear being won by people who really wanted/needed it. It was another great event and planning for next year has already began! Thank you for your support. It would not have been the same without you.
